What Are Consent Decree Cities?
Like the Department of Justice Civil Rights Division (“DOJ”), The Initiative: Advancing the Blue & Black Partnership believes that positive police engagement with the community is an effective way to improve relationships and a powerful remedy to unlawful police practices. For that reason, The Initiative tracks DOJ’s consent decrees issued against U.S. police departments found to have engaged in a pattern-or-practice of unconstitutional policing (“Consent Decrees”).
A significant component of DOJ Consent Decrees requires the police agency to communicate directly with community members, because, as DOJ states, “the community must be heard.”
Visit this page periodically to track how Consent Decree cities are progressing as it relates to violent and property crimes, and other critical metrics that serve as indicators of positive policing of communities.
